The Ordinary

To touch you, to kiss you and to behold,
I would hold you like never before,
because I am so ordinary.

To love you , to dream you and to make love,
I would own you like never before,
because I am so ordinary.

I will live on you , feed your ego
and hurt my ego
because I am so ordinary

I will love you , possess your breath
and burn me inside
because I am so ordinary

I will lose me to win you and
then lose you to win me
because I am so ordinary

I will loose you to fly away and
loose me to chase after
because I am so ordinary

I will burn my finger , earn my nights
eat my soul and feed my hunger
because I am so ordinary

I will fall, but call you never
I will call you, but never tell you ever
because I am so ordinary

Love me or love me not,
touch me or touch me not,
yearn me or earn me not,
I will burn and yearn

because I am so ordinary.

The Wait

I would have waited
If I had ever wanted truly and madly.
But , I didn't wait.

I would have waited
If I had never found out any reasons.

But, I didn't wait.

I would have waited
If I had felt the worth of this wait.
But, I didn't wait.

I needed a reminder, a constant touch,
a hovering shadow, a warm breath on my cold soul,
each and everyday , each and every night ..
And while I waited and I dreamt..
you turned into a dream.
The one that you forget up on waking,
the one that ask you to go back to sleep,
and still elude from you for the rest of the life.

So,  I didn't wait.
Instead I kissed the death.

That Delusional Girl

We were pregnant .. with our love..
then care and trust ...
and then affection and lust...
Wanted to bring it all out...
and nurture and build a blanket of bliss...

Cautious and anxious two...
Walked down the bridge...
Holding hands...
Rubbing shoulders...
and building a land of fantasy...
She saw it through her kaleidoscope..
that played with bright and dreamy colors...
He viewed it through his eyes...
which saw only black and white...
She saw the grey and pretended it to be white..
His eyes turned all grey into black...

His love grew into her ...
Hearts did beat in unison..
Souls did find each other...
Thoughts did talk...
Breath did catch up...
and she began to see through his eyes...
and she changed...

His hands were there... her hands could feel the clasp
but no longer to be seen
His voice was there... and she was all ears
but no longer sweet and melodious

Hands were stretched out for a touch...
All ears for a word...
Out in the jungle...
Lonely and low..
and no longer due...for anything .. ever!

Sleeping Sweetness

It was a soft and feeble cry, not sure if it was out of happiness or resistance. But, for me it was the sweetest sound ever heard and it further gifted me with the following visual of its source - my daughter. She was looking around the delivery room after the initial cry and I looked at her thanking God for such a sweet baby. My heart was pounding to shower her with all my love and be the best mother in the world. But, little did I know that the door from the delivery room to the world of reality was not so far away!

Like any other woman, the nine months of pregnancy was a roller coaster ride of emotions for me and I expected the delivery to be the culmination of all. However, the ride was only about to begin:). But, the ignorant I was there at the exit of the delivery room with a list of lullabies running in my mind and imagined a baby whom I can cuddle all the time! And then the nurse handed me the baby and before I could sing any of those songs or even hold her correctly, she started feeding!!!

“Amma, this is serious stuff .You better get on track“.  Did she whisper this to me?

My room’s window opened to the view of a quiet hilly residential area and beyond which was a lagoon and it made its way towards the sea. I was sitting on the bed and my kiddo was sleeping peacefully. I even thought that I could drift away to a creative mood and take some snaps and may scribble down a poem and then…”wu wu wouaaaaa….” My peacefully sleeping honey punch is now crying! What to do? Feeding? Checked! Burping? Checked! Diaper Change? Checked! Time is running out! I took her to my arms and did a cradle hold and moved gently, so that she can soothe herself to sleep. This is how my mom does, but it is not working for me now! I changed the movement, I changed the hold. I started singing lullaby, maintained a sweet smile on my face. Not working!  “Try it out and don’t drop out”, I was telling myself and after a 30 minute struggle, she fell asleep. As I was placing her on that fancy mattress, I was also trying to remember that particular ‘movement’ which did the trick…

Back at home we were geared up more for her sleep needs and it resulted in a rocker, a crib cum cradle and a cloth hammock. There were times, when she would simply drift away to sleep while feeding or she would hold to the cradle and sleep like an obedient kiddo or smiles and sleeps to grand mom’s lullabies.  But, most of the time I will have to work out all my wrong muscles in an attempt to put her to sleep. And, then I tell myself “She needs you Amma. You are her super woman!”

When she dozes off, I sneak out to enjoy luxuries in life like bathing, brushing, eating, chatting with parents, watching TV, reading a book/newspaper, photographing, blogging, etc. While doing these, my mind would flutter towards her cradle and see if she is showing any signs of waking up or hunger pangs, pulling that sheet to her mouth, chewing on her frock? And if she is all fine then, that would be the auspicious moment for my neighbor to release a loud sneeze or that shower to let down a few water drops or the fish vendor to press that unpleasant horn or our driver to come and squeak open the gate or that harmless pressure cooker to release its stress!

My baby then eventually wakes up to all the pandemonium around her and cries and looks around the room for me to appear and comfort. I would then run to her, pick her up, place a soft kiss on the moist cheeks and hold her to my chest and pass on my warmth. The rocker and the cradle would fail and I will start my various cradle movements and hum a soft lullaby. In the process I get irritated, feel failed, tensed, and angry but my face would show a perfect ‘inner peace’. I may want to put her to sleep quickly but would move her only slowly. Then, as the time passes she yawns and I would chuckle. Time moves more slowly now and I will wait for the moment and then she falls asleep. :)

I would then move quickly yet quietly to the room , but notices (every time) my sleeping cutie on the mirror. Now, I cannot just take away my eyes from my baby, but only adore how innocently she sleeps. I don’t want to place her on the cradle, instead cuddle and rest her chin on my shoulder.  My shower, my food, my fresh photographs, my FB notifications can all wait, but I don’t want to leave my sleeping sweetness.  Awwww! I love being a mother :)

The Last Appam

Cheena chatti gasped in surprise when the cold appam batter was poured into it, the batter was then slowly cooked to perfection till its edges were turned golden brown. Amma carefully separated the appam from chatti and continued to make the next ones. Watching all these acts were me and a bowl of piping hot vegetable stew. The aroma of coconut milk and sight of carrots, beans and potato of the stew compelled my bowels to yell for more. Amma was well aware of my needs and made a batch of appams. Achan and Aniyan emerged from their respective corners in the house, like snakes come out of their holes during first rain. They too must have been invited by the hot appams and stew. Once the hungry souls were satisfied, Amma made couple more appams for herself and left the last appam in the chatti. I knew why she does that, while she finishes the appams on her plate, she will call out and ask me to get the last appam resting at the chatti. This way she ensured that she too get to eat a piping hot appam!

Fast forwarding to today’s world where I am a working woman and living with my husband. My nights are filled with planning for next day and mornings are spend executing them meticulously, so that the machine called home can run without fail.  Once home is up and running, I will run towards office were a set of instructions are to be followed and some decisions need to be made. One of the many juggling activities managed during this ride is preparing breakfast. I had tried oats, corn flakes, milk and fruits, bread and omelet and almost all other quick breakfast options. However, realized that the traditional breakfast options are the ones which are healthy and filling and keeps us fuelled for the entire day. While my husband is served piping hot food from tawa / chatti directly, I eat the ‘Last’ piece and enjoy the moment.

Dear readers, now you must be thinking what kind of men we have at the family and may be sympathizing with me and Amma? Halt there… look at each and every family around, don’t we see that woman in the family is the one who is at the kitchen planning, preparing and feeding food for the entire family? While the world has progressed so far and Men and Women share most kinds of work and we have celebrity men chefs and cookery show male anchors, we do not see Men in their kitchen actively working for his family. It is not that men don’t do any work related to kitchen, they bring groceries, praise women for their cooking skills, sometimes clean the dishes, rarely cut the vegetables, but they have never come forward and has taken ownership to manage the entire kitchen activities. Is it our social set up or historically men used to go out for hunting and women stayed back and reared kids and cooked food?  If that is the case then wake up, today women go out for work just like men and handle all the stress out there , driving a vehicle, purchasing grocery, managing money are all done by her. Still, why men have to depend on women for home food?

I am dreaming of a day when men would throw away all their inhibitions and take up kitchen tasks, and women in the family wait at the dining table for a hot appam to be served with love. Kids will run behind dads on festive days and ask for their favorite sweets to be made. Our future generations would remember of days when their dad and mom both shared cooking and feeding the family. Well, technically the last appam would always remain, but the good thing would be it will not be always for Amma.

Googling Anxiety

Disclaimer: I have no special interest towards any particular search engines. However, you will find me mentioning the name Google here. I am still googling to find out the cause.

She twisted and rolled a pen and occasionally thumped it onto the table. Her eyes were fixed onto mine and all ears for me. Then, I muttered, “Preeclampsia” (A serious condition in pregnancy characterized by high blood pressure and fluid retention.). A smile broke into her lips, but she maintained eye contact. There was a deep sigh of relief from my husband who was seated next to me. It seemed like they were trying to prove something and just won. Tension in the room was relieved and he said, “Doctor, as soon as any symptom appears she googles and diagnosis it herself!” She then took my blood pressure and asked to do a routine urine analysis to rule out pre eclampsia!  My husband laughed at me and said “She wants you to do this, so that you can have peace of mind!” This time doctor broke her silence and took that fated pen again and said, “No, I really want to rule it out However, relax and take complete rest. No laptop or TV for you for next 24 hours.”

Being an IT professional and staying away from hometown and from the advices of mother and warnings from mother in –law, what is so abnormal about googling and keeping up to-date about one’s pregnancy? Though pregnancy is a totally normal phenomenon which can make any normal individual insane with numerous symptoms, advices from every nook and corner, and a puffed up face. I decided to adopt Google as my God Mother as soon as I was planning to become a mother. My own mother and other women folks in the family were out of picture and were considered only for pampering me.  I was enthralled at the sight of thousands of sites dedicated for baby making, pregnancy detection kit, etc.  A close friend of mine had ordered a dozen of these kits and by the time she got pregnant, she could actually write a paper on the efficiency of various brands in detecting early pregnancy! Planning and preparing is important, but it also makes you weaker to face the unexpected. After reading various online forums and sites I had a clear picture of symptoms related to pregnancy, usage of detection kit, conception chances, routine tests, etc. Whenever my lack of experience confused me, my doctor who is an extremely patient and quick witted lady would first prompt me to utter the medical terms and then explains it to me.

My mother’s generation hardly had any such funky tools to look for information. She relied on doctors or health magazines or experienced relatives. It was also a networking activity which resulted in the establishment of support groups.  Women of that era relied on doctors and did not have any pre-judgment about symptoms. On the contrary, availability of millions of resources and advancement in technology is now capable of viewing any normal situation abnormally.  Recently a health camp was conducted at my firm and practitioners were sent to a dietician. Needless to say some of my colleagues instantly googled to validate what he had to say and bombarded him with questions. The other day, a set of inquisitive people were discussing the difference between purple, violet, lilac, and lavender. This is not because they are jobless, but this is the trend!

Car’s engine got started and a song started playing ,
‘♫ Que Sera, Sera, Whatever will be, will be. The future's not ours, to see ♫’. We left the clinic. I realized that being inquisitive is good, but it shouldn’t lead to anxiety and stress. We have knowledge at our finger tips and it doesn’t mean that we should be knowledgeable about everything. Be it pregnancy or on anything in this universe, realization on where to stop is important. I started imagining the endless possibilities of doubts I will have till delivery and beyond and the millions of search results … Thump!  My baby kicked, maybe she wants to tell that, we should simply live the moment!

My Lake ... My Hope

My balcony gives me a view of a small , in fact a mini lake. Beyond the lake there is a school ground. This lake is dotted with small bushes and fallen tree branches and tall wild grass. Occasionally black ducks fly into the lake and would be mostly accompanied by cranes. The flow, the level of water and its color changes based on each season.

This stream used to flow towards a bigger lake some 100 m away. For some reason, this flow was cut by the people. So during monsoon, our 'mini' lake overflows. But, the presence of a water body near my home, made me happy. Also, it was the bustling place for many living creatures.
My kitchen windows too opens to this lake and gave me the pleasure of watching various types of birds, ducks, flowers on the wild grass, water shining in the sun's rays etc;

It was on such one afternoon I found out that, it is also becoming a dump yard for the people who passes by this lake. I saw a swanky SUV stopping on its way and the gentleman who was inside dumping some plastic bag into it. The other day, it was the workers at the school ground who dumped waste into this lake.

Gradually the lake started stinking and I had to close my windows. During monsoon, this water got into the roads and it became a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Even cattle and dogs were reluctant to have the water. People hated the sight of this lake and avoided walking by the side. I even thought of shifting from that flat. But, nobody took any initiative to clean that messy lake.
Time went by, seasons changed, windows remained closed, birds flew away, flowers withered, grass dried. But no one responded. It was then various contagious diseases started gripping the city. Corporation workers arrived and started cleaning the water. The lake started recovering from the damages made by us. Birds came in and life sprouted there again.

This whole event made me think that why I shut my windows against this lake, just like me running away from issues around me. I enjoyed its beauty and the chirruping of birds, but couldn't extend my help to it. When we were school kids, we were more close to nature, at least in classrooms we used to study about science, reason behind rain, effects of pollution,etc; This made us think then, that we should do something good for the world when we grow up. But, when we grow up and is capable of doing something good, we tend to forget all those. We remembers more of our expected salary figures, tax cuts, etc;

Are we not the same school kids who yearned to grow up and independent so that we can help our country and nature? Yes , we are . So friends let us not shut our windows against issues. Let's be those small kids again and accomplish what we wanted to do then.

Let the nature flourish in every corner and let's inspire our next generation.

Lovers & Friends

Feb 14, 2009
We decided to go for a stroll at the nearby handicrafts exhibition center cum garden (Shiplaramam) and then to have a nice Barbecue. Feb 14th has lost its charm in India due to the protests made by various activists, attack on girls at the pub, forced marriages of couples found in parks, beaches, etc; Most of my friends decided to celebrate the Valentine’s day on the next weekend as they were afraid of attacks. On the other hand we were very confident as we are married for 1.5 years. Though, I was very confident my hands automatically kept more 'sindhoor' on my forehead. Yup I got stamped!!!! We reached the exhibition center, a security guard at the entrance stared at us and called us. He then told “Sorry sir, friends and lovers are not allowed!!" We were shocked. First of all we are married and secondly we found it as discrimination in democratic India! We told him that we are married and then proceeded to the ticket counter. The lady at the counter repeated the security guard's words “Friends and Lovers Not allowed" This time we both lost our temper and told them that this is discrimination. She intervened and told “I am doing my duty sir".

This incident fuelled my thoughts on various discriminations happening in our country, be it cast or creed or sexual orientations or 'lovers'. Our country requires people's attention on various matters such as poverty, unemployment, etc; But , people have their focus on other's private life such as these. How come we allow a set of people to roam around in the city and beat young girls going to pubs or teenagers at a park? Who are these moral police? What are their qualifications? It is our right to be with a person whom we are comfortable with. It is a person's freedom to decide whether or not to go to any pubs. Doing these kind of moral policing will not help anybody. I heard politicians saying that pubs are not part of our culture. Then what is our culture? Is it allowing a hub of slums to grow in our country? Is it allowing terrorists to fool our security guards and hamper our lives? Is it leaving our girls for immoral trafficking? Is it beating the ladies and barring their freedom? Is it slaving thousands of villagers by not giving education or electricity at their villages? Is it granting liceneces to liquor shops and pubs more than that of hospitals and schools and involving in bribary? Is it discarding the developments of government hospitals and schools?

If these moral police who generally consists of uneducated and unemployed youth is trying to achieve anything for their country, then they should open their eyes and see the real issues in India. Why can’t they form a network containing informers from various parts of our country, who can inform the police if they see anything suspicious going on.
Why can’t they bring up issues such as education of underprivileged children or health services for senior citizens? If they are trying to bring in the values and if they vision the values mentioned in the epics, then I plead them to read our epics and show me the chapter where it is written to beat young girls and where it is written about banning friends and lovers from visiting a park.

We don’t need any moral police. This is India, democratic country with laws, judiciary in place. Nobody can buy as by showing political gimmicks, Beware!!!

Summer Showers

I found out this poem recently when I was cleaning my shelf.. I
was thinking that I had lost it long ago... I wrote this when I was a student and that time my favorite topic for poems was rain..

The road was nothing, but
a tattered black ribbon.
And, the wind was blowing
in a rush to dry us more.
We were then sitting on that bench
which watches the horizon at its best.

My eyes met his, but my
love couldn't flow into them.
As it was dry as my trembling lips
and as dense as the silence between us.
I wished to touch him, but
I had to hold my waving hair.
We wished to sit closer
but, the sweat had wetted our arms.

I saw him hiding a rose
behind his pocket, close to his chest.
But, it had lost more of its colour
than of its freshness.
Thus each second struggled
to make its way beyond our hold.

I was patting him gently
and I saw , a group of clouds
moving in the sky.
The wind was gentle
and was more as a breeze,
which had come to our lives

An IT Woman

I never believed in the term IT Woman. I thought there is only an IT professional. This was the lesson I learnt in the initial days of my engineering. During lab sessions, my teacher said, in a professional environment there is no man or woman in a professional environment.

There may be a lot of biological and psychological differences between a man and a woman. But, in an environment like IT these differences do not have any relevance. Here only your smartness and logic is valued, which is equal for a man and a woman. Even then there are a lot of social conditions in India which will make an Indian woman work harder to be in par with her male colleague. But, these are never considered in the design of the whole system.

In most of the MNCs there are a lot of forums for various groups like Women, Gays, Lesbians; etc. Most of these forums are made to show that corporates care for these groups. I always have thought that why we need to have separate forums. We just need to consider everyone equal, because at the end of the day each and every one is delivering the same amount of work. Each of us is billing the client at the same rate. But, recently I started realizing that there is a need for more support for Women. This support has to come from everyone. There is no need to have a formal forum, but for that everybody’s thought process has to be changed.

When I was a teenager, I had heard many people saying that it is a Man’s world. I always wanted to break that concept; I had most of my friends as boys. In college I was a single girl in an otherwise all boys committee. When selected to an MNC, I was the single girl in a group of 10. I always had a hidden pleasure for all these, since I wanted to break the men’s world. I found that I am one of the very few ladies in my office. I found myself as the single woman in my project team. I always made others’ in my group understand that I need not to be over cared or over supported as I am the only lady in the group.

When I got married my colleagues expected me to behave like an ideal Indian wife, preparing all the three meals for my husband, to become shyer, to avoid project parties, detach from my male friends, to wear sari to work place; etc. I surprised them by maintaining my previous image.

I always knew that when compared to my unmarried male colleague, with whom I will be compared for my promotions and recognitions, I will have to work harder. I may have to sacrifice my quality time with my family. I will have to rush to office to support a production migration on a week end, even when my husband is still sleeping.
I may not be able to rest and relax after a day’s work. I may have to put artificial smile on my face on a night out party. I may have to agree with the tight project schedules, even when I know in my mind that my work life balance is going to be screwed up.

Very little did I realize that all my efforts are going to be just reduced into some numbers when Senior Management reviews my work. I never knew that I will be addressed by some employee number along with the number of hours billed to the client. My competitors always had more client service hours, owing to their single status and 24X7 work attitudes. I wondered why no body is appreciating a woman’s ability in delivering equally qualified work in less number of hours while maintaining a healthy work life balance. This realization shocked me. That was when one of my colleagues asked me a question, whom would you select as the best performer when a male and female has equal number of credits, equal client service hours. I had an answer in my mind, but I asked him answer the question. He answered, “I will select the male professional”. I didn’t give my answer. I was completely taken aback with his answer.

His answer made me think why women professionals are not given more opportunities like their male counterparts. This is because they assume many things, they think that when a woman joins the company, she will leave it to join her husband, when she gets married she will behave unprofessionally, when she bears a child she will lose concentration on work and will take more number of holidays, when given an onsite opportunity she will start cribbing to return back in a few months. I challenge all IT bigwigs to stop assuming and give women the same opportunities. Then you will see more women in the top of career ladder, even for the sake of showing some numbers.

Evaluating some one’s performance based on some number logic can be done by any kid. It doesn’t require any management gurus. But, they are required if we can evaluate each and everyone based on their given opportunities and how they reciprocated to them. It is time to change the systems. Now, let me give my answer to the question which my colleague had asked me. My answer is that I will appreciate both of them as best performers. No rule or evaluation system is bigger than the efforts spent by the professionals. I may change my evaluation system but, I will never disappoint my colleague and will never disrespect his / her efforts.

And, to my dear readers let me convey a good message to you that I got promoted this year. Let me move forward in my career and help my colleagues change their thought process. Let’s change the old systems. Let us bring in equality.

Wings are up!

Oh! I hate to alight down
Evening rays are just coming down
Sky is meekly showering upon
And,asking me to alight down?

It's the pair of novice wings
Waving in the air for liberty
Happy in the state of puberty
And, asking me to alight down ?

Just I began to kiss my mate
Lest I will lose fellow itself
Dare not to listen to me crooning ever?
And, asking me to alight down!

It's my eyes that are watching the land
It's my legs that are daring to land
It's my wings that are doing the deed
Now, tell me how to alight down?

Rhythm of Rain

There is only one thing in this world, which imitates your feelings. That is rain!!! Also, it brings back all your memories when rain had formed a significant background. I think it is the mere presence of rain which helps you in getting back your memory.

Rain is described by many poets and authors of our country. I feel rain is the best drama queen I have ever seen. It comes with thunder, lightning and many forms of wind and creates your mood or it rains as per your mood.

When I see the rain from my flat’s balcony I remember the times when I used to watch rain from the sit out with my father. The slopping road in front our house always used to take a lot of sand and small and colorful stones along with its flow.
The stones used to shine in the rays of sun which used to show its face among the darker rain clouds. Altogether it used to give me the feeling of some color water flowing down the road!

We used to have a lot of discussions while watching rain. I usually tend to get distracted towards the ripples forming in the water around the coconut trees or how water is dripping down from the first to the bottom leaf of my rose plant. Movement of water from one place to another, leaves wavering in the gentle breeze, comfort of the cool wind, warmth of my father’s hug, tea served while having my small doubts cleared forms my childhood rain memoirs.

And it was on one rainy night I realized that how much dear is my family to me. It was raining cats and dogs with thunders. Every time I hear the sound of the thunder I will see if my family is safe and sitting away from window, switchboards and seated only on any wooden platforms. I used to even keep a big bamboo stick for myself so that I can use it in case of an emergency!!! Thanks to all the alerts coming on TV. My parents were surprised on seeing my super care attitude. But, I was so tensed at that time and was in search of the safest place in the house to be ready for a thunderous monsoon.

In college, there were many days I had yearned for a heavy, thunderous rain. I wanted to seek my friend’s extra care and comfort for those days. Those were days when I wanted to enjoy the maximum freedom. But, my mind was never ready to come out of my traditional upbringing. I wanted to run out and get drenched in the rain. But, I always ended up in enjoying it under the darker shades of my old umbrella. I still remember that day when it was raining cats and dogs and everybody got stuck in the college. No umbrellas were able to save you in that evening. I stood in the verandah of my college, watching the rain, chatting with my friend. I felt my feelings for him were raining there. We decided to take our umbrellas and came out of the college. We took the longest route to come outside, walked very slowly and sang old film songs and had the happiest time together.

My next memory about rain is in Mumbai. I was very happy with my first job and new friends and my life in the commercial capital of my country. One day afternoon a holiday was declared for my office and the reason was rain!!! All of us came out and found thousands of people outside waiting to get into their buses in an otherwise quiet yet busy Powai. Few of my friends went outside and started dancing, I thought Oh! Haven’t they seen rain?? But, I was yet to see the power of Mumbai rains. I missed my first bus and managed to get into the last bus from the office.

We opened up our laptops and started listening to songs as our vehicle was moving in snail speed. Thousands of people were seen on the road, stranded without vehicle, helpless as their telephone networks were down. We were very confident as we were in the office bus. We could easily hear people on the streets discussing about the destructions caused by rain. Our vehicle almost stopped moving. There was no way out!!! We couldn’t go back or forward. It was then we 6 friends decided to walk to our guest house. We decided on the longest and safest route instead of the shortest and risky route. That risky route which we opted out had the highest death rate in the city. Electricity had gone, vehicles were seen immobile, people walking but it seemed that the rain will never end.

We decided to walk through the middle of the road. As we walked hand in hand a group of 4 girls and 2 boys who were new to the city, we found floating carcasses, people asking for Rs.10/- for giving a single helping hand. Still rain continued as it was trying to play with our limits. After walking for about half an hour we found a huge pit hole right in the center of the road. This made us to use the city buses as our new path. We got into buses through back door then got down from front door J

Finally after 9 hours of walk we all reached our guest house with lost shoes, laptop with damaged display and 2 friends less!!! Though we found our friends who lost their way on next day morning, rain left a scary feeling in my mind. This was there in my mind till I left that city.

Now, I have started enjoying the rain again. It gives me back the fresh memories of my childhood when I started discovering everything, of my teenage days when rain gave me chances to make me feel as a grown up, of my college days when I started yearning for love and rain together.

Rain is getting over now. It will come again to wash out my busy mind and bring back the memories afresh.
Let me go back to my balcony and wait for the rain. Let me play to its rhythm.

Daughter of a Super Mom

Traveling by auto to and fro my office is giving me a lot of time to think on subjects other than my work and what food to be made at home. Thanks to the Traffic jams at all the junctions and all the flyovers in this city. It gives me around 2 hours on every day to catch up with the new models of car, to play number games, think about my golden child hood days, etc;

Recently I realized that in all my childhood memories I am thinking of the food my mom had prepared. May be it is because of my fate of eating food prepared by myself, recent visit of my brother at home or my husband’s frequent cribbing on the food quality or my mom-in-law’s instructions over phone on how to prepare good food for your husband. But, frankly speaking I don’t like the food that I prepare at times. I am thinking that my food preparing skills are diminishing over a long term listening of other’s cribbing!!!

Sometimes I think that I am a woman of 21st century. I work for 12 hours at office. Prepare tea in the morning and dinner. Prepare all three meals on week ends. Also, very rarely prepares food for family friends. But, I fail on everyday in front of my mother’s capability of managing a home, who was a woman of 20th century.

My mom got into her job immediately after her graduation very similar to my campus placement at the age of 21. Went to the state capital and stayed away from the family to kick start her career. This was very similar to me going out of the state and started staying in a flat with roomies. But, her story took place in 1970s and mine after 2005. She never had a boy friend in her college, any big shopping malls to spend the week end, no big restaurants to hang out with friends like me. She used to read books, write small stories and do small house hold chores to spend time.

She got married, an arranged one and in 3 years became mother of 2. She used to work for 8 hours a day, managed two kids, balanced the joint family and her husband. But, used to prepare very tasty food for the whole family. She never used to complain that her body is paining or head is aching. Her food was never a subject of discussion in the family, because all used to take her granted in that matter.

On the other hand, I discuss with my family members, colleagues about balancing work and life, about having no time in preparing food. I also make it a big thing about cooking dinner after reaching home late.

My mom used to manage her work pressure, which was very high when I reached my teen age. She used to handle the political pressure as well as job pressure very well. She soon got a name as the best officer and even started resolving issues in my neighbor hood along with my father. She always used to keep us away from my father’s very active social life, his resignation from the communist party, etc;
In the mean time cared us, helped us in studies, arranged small parties for us and our friends, etc;

But, me having all facilities at home, managing a family of just two people can’t even spend some time in learning and cooking good food for my family?
I get confused even when I have to prepare tea + coffee + soft drink at the same time for 15 people?
I think my mind set has to be changed. I still can manage my time. My chemistry teacher used to tell me that you always have 24 hours at hand. I think I can easily cook yummy break fast, spend 2 hours at gym, 12 hours at office, cook tasty and healthy dinner for my family.
But, even then I will think of my mom’s tasty food, sweated forehead, vigilant eyes, busy hands, sweet sound, and her strong attitude while supporting my father. These will be the snapshots in my memory which will fuel my wish to be a perfect woman of 21st century.
